Soulmates

When I was a child, I was fascinated by animals, and dreamt of being a vet. I first found out that this profession existed when my big sister’s guinea pig got sick.

Days later, I witnessed a boy squishing a worm against a tree in kindergarten. Once the bully had left the poor writhing creature alone, I peeled it from the rough tree bark, took it to the teacher, and informed her that we needed to take it to the vet. Sadly, the overweight lady just laughed, patted me on the head, took the ailing worm out of my hand, and that was the last I ever saw of it.

The dreams of healing animals and the special connection I had with them faded with the onset of adolescence.

It wasn’t until much later, when my life crashed all around me and the animals started talking to me, that I reconnected with them and started exploring this sensibility. Since then, I realized how much wisdom each creature holds, and how much we can learn from them.

Certainly, it’s a big a lesson in humility when you get off the high horse of your human-centric perspective, and start looking at our planet through the eyes of another species. What do you think the birds have to say about humans? What would a gecko or an ant say, if they were to observe us? Why wouldn’t they take an interest in us, as much as we study them?

The truth is, they look at our species like an adult would look at a child: loveable, clumsy, and with many lessons yet ahead of us. Considering how destructive a lot of human life is on the planet, they are a truly forgiving bunch. The message I hear time and again is: „Nature is much stronger than any one species. Yes, a lot of what you do is damaging, but don’t be so arrogant to think humans can destroy nature. Ultimately, you do more damage to your own species than Nature.“

In the years since, more and more animals have come forward to share their friendship, love and wisdom. Each one of them tells me it wants to be painted and have its message shared, so that more people can benefit and learn how to find equilibrium, peace and their true place in this world.

And so, I’ve been busy drawing and painting them, so you, too, can connect to Nature and look at life on earth from a different perspective.

Isn’t it funny that I wanted to heal animals, but as it turns out, they have been the true Healer for me?
